Formed in Portsmouth on the South coast of England in 1984, RLD’s self-financed debut single ‘Wherever You May Run’ earned them plenty of Radio 1 support, a John Peel session and a subsequent deal with Quiet Records, who released the singles ‘Released Emotions’ in April 1986 and ‘Take Me In Your Arms’ in June 1987.
June 1988 saw the band release a split album with Birmingham’s The Sect titled ‘Soft Lights And Loud Guitars’ on the Released Emotions label, followed a year later by the well received single ‘Last Night’.
It was time for an album and 1991 saw the released of their much anticipated first full-length ‘More Songs About Love And War’ on Released Emotions. Critically acclaimed Sounds said: “If you like The Clash you’ll like this” and Big Takeover mused “Classic punk that doesn't sound at all dated or nostalgic. Terrific LP!” . Extensive touring of the UK and Europe followed as did compilation appearances and a single for the German Incognito label.
1994 saw their third album ‘Nothing At The Moment’ on Ank Records. More tours of Europe and singles followed. The band were approached to write and record a song for Czech footy team, FK Teplice, as RLD had played at the club's party to celebrate their promotion to the Czech Premier League. ‘Hey! Anastasia’ was re-recorded with suitable lyrics and is still played at Teplice's home games when the team runs out.
Other highlights included 1998’s ‘Lethal’ album and the band’s 2000 signing to America’s Zip Records who released a best of album ‘Chance Meeting’ (with sleeve notes by none other than punk legend Charlie Harper) and the ‘Nettle’ EP in 2003.
The band continues to tour and recently appeared on several compilations. They are currently recording their next album for Zip Records, due for release in early 2005.
